Piracy on Cheung Chau Ferry ,1900
As reported by Hong Kong Colonial Government, Captain Superintendent of Police, F.H. May, on 6th Mar 1900, at 3:30pm, a launch named Shun Fat left Western Praya of Hong Kong Island heading for Cheung Chau.
When it approached the water near Che Kung Mun Island, 5 robbers emerged from within a group of passengers, ordered the crew to stop the boat, not long after a small boat approached and another gang got on to join robbers on Shun Fat launch.
They then sailed to South West side of Lantau Island to rob 2 other junks.
Eventually, the pirates rob all passengers on Shun Fat of valuables worth $25 Hong Kong Dollars before disappearing into Lantau Island.
Nobody was arrested.

Cheung Chau, Ferry and Pier
1910 Jan 01
Cheung Chau, Ferry and Pier
Walter Schofield, Assistant District Officer for New Territories South (1910′s), wrote the ferry serving Cheung Chau was single-decked, run by Cheung Chau Kai Fong Wui.
Single voyage costed HK$3 cents, for HK$5 cents, Kai Fong Wui would provide a bamboo chair for you at the front of the deck.
Ferry Ordinance was passed in 1917, requiring operator to replace those old launches ferrying between Yaumatei, Kowloon City and Cheung Chau, with 2nd hand Star Ferry boats, to avoid those old launches going turtle during journey, and therefore loss of lives.
In 1928, new operator issued new ferry time schedule causing inconvenience to islander. The crux of the issue was the time table primarily designed to suite the schedule of passenger from Hong Kong Island, not to the fisherman from Cheung Chau.
Cheung Chau pier was constructed with wood before 1920′s.
On 13th of August in 1920, Hong Kong Colonial Government Director of Public Work, A H Hollingsworth gazetted to invite interest party to tender for erection of concrete pier at Cheung Chau.
From then on, wooden pier disappeared from Cheung Chau.

Hong Kong Government subsidy to Cheung Chau ferry
2013 May 24
Hong Kong Government subsidy to Cheung Chau ferry
In the paper dated 24th, May 2013, submitted by Transport and Housing Bureau to Transport Panel of Legislative Council, the Bureau stated the 2011-12 subsidy to the 6-route outlying islands ferry operators amounted to HK$37m.
Of the subsidy, HK$3.52m was given to New World Ferry for Cheung Chau and Central route children concession fare.
It is the highest amount the 6 routes in operation, far beyond the second highest of Mui Wo and Central route, at just HK$1.46m.
The subsidy is expected to go up to HK$191m in next license period, based on actual expenses, inflation rate and minimum wages etc.
Some legislator queried why not give subsidy directly for fuel expenses, the biggest expenses item in ferry operation.
Average daily passenger volume for Cheung Chau and Central route amounted to 23,610, much more than 11,648 for Discovery Bay and Central route.
